The History of Oktoberfest

Harmony Sweets asked:

The first Oktoberfest was held on Ocotber 12, 1810, in Munich to celebrate the wedding of Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Maria Teresa of Saxony-Hildburghausen on what was to become known as Theresienwieses – Theresa’s fields. In subsequent years, horse races were held on the fields to celebrate the anniversary of the royal wedding. This annual event became Oktoberfest tradition. Oktoberfest is dedicated to the fall harvest and to beer, the region’s most famous product. People came from throughout Germany to enjoy the celebration consisting of dancing, singing, and drinking beer.

Oktoberfest Today

Oktoberfest 2005 celebrates it’s 172nd year. Oktoberfest is the largest festival in the world, with 6 million visitors from around the world attending the Munich Oktoberfest each year. Each year, these attendees consume more than 5 million liters of beer and over 200,000 pork sausages, as well as large quantities of traditional hearty fare such as sausage, hendl (chicken) and sauerkraut, along with such Bavarian delicacies as roast ox tails.

Only six Munich breweries are allowed to serve beer at Oktoberfest – Löwenbräu, Spaten, Augustiner (pictured right), Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. Each Bierzelte (beer “tents”) hold some 3,000-10,000 people. There are currently 14 main tents at the Oktoberfest. A special Oktoberfest beer is brewed for the occasion which is slightly darker and stronger, in both taste and alcohol.

The festivities are accompanied by a program of events, including the Grand Entry of the Oktoberfest Landlords and Breweries, the Costume and Riflemen’s Procession, and a concert involving all the brass bands represented at the

“Wies’n”.

Kit asked:

I have been with my guy for 4 yrs, we are engaged to be married in Oct, 2008. Two years ago, half jokingly, I told him that once we were married that all he needed to do for V-day was a card and dinner. Last night he said that he was going to get me a great gift this year because its the last V-day gift he will have to get me. Really I’m ok with this arrangement because lets face it you guys have it easy…flowers, jewelry, stuffed animals, chocolates… the ideas are endless…. what do we women have??? Here in lies my dilema, I know that he is going to get me something really nice and I don’t have a clue what to do for him! I’ve used up all my good ideas!
1st year = 100 hersheys kisses which I opened and replaced all the tags with personal reasons of why I loved him.
2nd year = I made scrapbook clue cards leading him all over the house finding little treasures…ending in the bedroom.
3rd year = I filled a basket with all of his favorite homemade cookies, coffee, chocolates
4th year = I filled a Crockpot full of ingrediants to make his own chili (something he had been talking about for a while) along with a cook book and a homemade card that said Your Hot…

So what can I possibly do for him this year???? Please help!!

The Many Types of Coffee Pots

Roland Jefferson asked:

The definition of a coffee pot is a vessel used to brew or make coffee. These come in many different styles and offer various ways to produce the desired brew.

Drip Maker

The most widely used coffee pot today is the drip maker. These work by placing coffee in a filter and placing it inside of the container which holds water. The water is heated and pumped through the coffee where it then drips into the pot below. Water temperature is controlled internally to maintain a temperature just below boiling. Boiling coffee tends to produce a bitter taste which is undesirable to most people. These drip pots come with many features which include clocks, alarms, and delayed timers. Most offer the benefit of setting the timer to go off about the time you usually get up in the morning. It is very pleasing to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Percolator

Another popular type coffee pot is the percolator. Percolators work by pumping water into the container holding the coffee until the desired result is achieved. The coffee stays in the same container in which it is brewed. A basket keeps the dry coffee from being deposited into the coffee container. Percolators were popular in the 1970s and 80s before the drip maker became the coffee maker of choice. Percolators are still used today to produce large quantities of coffee since the drip maker usually has a limit of twelve cups.

Vacuum

Many people still enjoy the tradition of vacuum coffee pots because the pots offer interesting shapes and designs. These pots work on the theory that steam creates a vacuum which draws the water and steam through the coffee grounds without distributing the grounds throughout the coffee. The process is similar to the percolator with the exception of the repeated pumping action required of the percolator.

Coffee Pot Safety

There were times when coffee pots were made with long cords which would reach from a good distance across the room. This became a hazard to children who were playing on the floor. Many young children were burned when they pulled the pot off in the floor and the coffee splashed on them. Today coffee pots usually come with a short cord that will only allow you to use it close to an electrical outlet. It is important that you not use an extension cord since this could allow small children to get hurt.

It is also important that your home coffee pot be equipped with a timer that will automatically shut off after a certain period of time, usually two hours. This could prevent a fire if you forget to turn the pot off before you leave the house. This feature can give you peace of mind when you remember half way through your day that you left the coffee pot on.
