4 Different Coffee Brewing Methods

baskets brew
Aaron Matthews-Morgan asked:

Coffee Brewing Methods range from popular Espresso or French Press methods to lesser used methods like Turkish. Here we explore the four most popular Coffee Brewing Methods: Espresso, French Press, Drip Filtration and Mokta or Stovetop method.

Espresso

Probably the most popular of the Coffee Brewing Methods in recent times is making an Espresso using a machine. Super hot, pressurized water is forced through fine ground, tightly packed coffee. The pressurized infusion process ensures that the water stays in contact with the coffee grounds long enough to draw out much of the coffee ground flavor. The water then finds a path through the coffee grounds. And the coffee commences to pour into your cup. When the water finds a path through the coffee grind it is referred to as the ’shot being pulled’ through the group.

The sign of a good espresso, using fresh coffee beans, is the richness of the crema. Crema is the hazelnut foam that sits on the surface of the coffee. This is produced by the pressurizing process and the oils of the coffee bean. Oils break down with time, and so a rich crema will be produced using fresh beans. And if you didn’t catch it when I started talking about Espresso, use a fine grind. Using a course grind allows the water to ‘brush past’ the grind rather than infuse with it. Using a course grind will still produce a good coffee, but it will taste more like a coffee produced using a Drip Filter coffee brewing method rather than true Espresso coffee.

French Press

One of the simplest of all Coffee Brewing Methods is the French Press or Plunger. This is probably the easiest way to make great coffee! The French Press works by directly mixing ground coffee with near boiling water. The coffee flavors get drawn out into the water and then the press or plunger is depressed, separating the exhausted coffee grind from the brew. While the process has a similar taste to the Drip Filtration style, the French Press can extract more flavor from the coffee grind by extending the brewing time. Manual infusion requires you to get your timing right. If you let the brewing process run too long you may end up with a bitter coffee. Conversely, if you brew too quickly you will have a weak tasting coffee.

One more point, use a course grind. You don’t want fine ground coffee escaping through the metal filter and into the brew. A dusty cup of coffee is not an experience worth having.

Drip Filtration

Let’s start with the Drip Filtration style. Drip Filtration is probably the most popular method of all. The Drip Filtration machine works by spraying hot water across ground coffee that is held in a conical shaped filter. The hot water then slowly moves through the ground coffee. Once the water reaches the bottom of the conical filter, it drips into a container beneath it.

The most widely used conical filters are made of paper, while expensive stainless steel or gold conical filters are also available. When buying paper filters, be sure to use oxygen bleached paper. Chemically treated papers may affect the taste of your coffee. Another point to be aware of with paper filters is that you may also have some of the flavorful coffee oils trapped by the paper filter. It is the oils that produce the rich crema when you make an espresso. The grind is also important with Drip Filtration. If the grind is too fine, you may clog the pores of your filter. You can avoid this by using a course grind (read about grinding here).

Finally, if you do not expect to drink the full pot of coffee, either by yourself (all that caffeine….) or with friends, beware the constantly heated coffee. It loses its flavor and may even become bitter. And the golden rule….never reheat coffee.

Mokta Pot/Stovetop

The Moka Pot style is also known as a Stovetop coffee pot. Moka pot’s come in several sizes including 2, 4 or 6 cup capacities. The Moka Pot a simple 3 piece pot. The water reservoir is at the base, with a coffee basket in the middle and the brewed coffee ends up in the top.

The coffee brewing method is very simple. The pot is placed on a stove top which heats the water in the lower reservoir. As the water reaches boiling point, the steam rises and the water starts to push upward through the coffee grounds. This continues to travel up the central funnel and seeps into the top chamber where it comes to rest. The process finishes when the coffee stops moving into the top chamber. This should only take a few minutes to brew depending on the cup size of the Moka pot.

The grind should be a fine grind, similar or finer to that used in an Espresso machine. If you want to fill the coffee basket the way traditional Italian drinkers do, then heap the coffee grounds high in the coffee basket and screw the two pieces together. Don’t worry about compacting the coffee. When the top half of the pot is screwed on, the grounds will be compacted by the filter screen. You should end up with a dry, compacted puck of coffee grounds at the end of brewing.

So there you have it. The four most popular Coffee Brewing Methods.

Which Team is the Deepest Team in the NBA?

baskets brew
Anthony E. M. asked:

Utah -or- Detroit

Utah:
PG. D. WILL – One of the best and strongest pg’s in the NBA. He can score, pass, and direct a team. He is the future of the pg position along w/ CP3, Parker, and Jose Calde of course.

SG. R. BREW – Athleticism, 12+ PPG, and defense

SF. AK47 – The guy does it all. He is the only guy I’ve seen come close to quadruple doubles.

PF. C. BOOZ – Up there amongst the best PF’s in the NBA. Has great hands, can score, rebound, etc.

C. MEHMET OKUR – One of the selct few All-star calibur big men that is equally adept outside from inside. He settles alot outside though. But, still is very talented and he can also rebound.

6. Kyle Korver – Great acquisition cause with all the bigs Utah has and the phsyical play he is open from the arc on a regular basis and thats his bread and butter.

7. Paul Millsap – Is a beast what more can you say
8. Matt Harpring – Is Kyle Korver w/ suffocating defense

9. Brevin Knight – A great addition he is one of best floor generals does not create turnovers and can even put up a couple baskets.

10. CJ Miles – Athletic w/ a lot of upside
11. Ronnie Brewer – Is a good 3 point shooter and defender
12. Jarron Collins – Sucks but can defend

The Jazz are deep from 1 through 11.

Detroit:
PG. BILLUPS – Mr. Big Shot, like Williams one of best pg’s in game. Best perimeter shooting pg along w/ Nash and undisputed the best defensive pg. Like, D. Will is a good passer and very strong and could score. The only difference is D. Will is the present and long future. While, Billups is present and short future since D. Will has a larger window being younger and all.

SG. RIP HAMILTON – Is the best player in the NBA moving w/o the ball. He is a great scorer and very underrated.

SF. TAYSHAUN PRINCE – Incredibly, underrated is a can do it all man. Not many teams have a player that can do this and Detroit and Utah have the luxury of having them in Prince and Kirlilenko.

PF. SHEED – Just, like Okur. In fact, Okur learned from Sheed playing alongside him in Detroit. Sheed is equally adept in the low post as well as perimeter and like Okur settles on perimeter. Yet, it works for him. He is also a good rebounder and blocker and has stuff in his game Okur doesnt like defensive intensity and overall passion.

C. MCDYESS – Is still a very capable player that can give you a double double just about every night.

6. Jason Maxiell – Like, Millsap is just a beast
7. Rodney Stuckey – Can shoot and lead the floor
8. Arron Afflalo – Can shoot and looks to be a keeper
9. Kwame Brown – BLOWS
10. Amir Johnson – Another beast. Thats a luxury 2 beasts on 1 team

11. Walter Herrmann – Another luxury 2 big men that are perimeterly sound in Hermmann and Sheed. That could create matchup problems

12. Lindsay Hunter – Is Brevin Kinght w/ better shot and clutch factor. Like, Knight makes good decisions and protects the ball.

Detroit is deep 1-11 as well

Both these teams have very similar players and are very similarly deep. I wouldnt mind a NBA Finals series between the two. Do you all mind and who would win?
Lakers are far from the deepest. They have a hell of a starting lineup and a good bench. But, you have no big men on the bench that is good after Turiaf left. You got Mbenga, Mihm, Powell (raw). Trevor Ariza is not good I have seen him on the Knicks he has no shot and his d varies game to game.

Luke Walton, Radman, Farmar, and Vujacic are good. But, both Pistons and Jazz have better bench players. Thats why the Jazz played a hard fought series against LA and had almost the same record and Detroit had a better ecord than LA.
I never said center I said big men. Millsap, Johnson, Maxiell, and Johnson are all good big men. Lakers only have Valdy they lack good size w/ Mbenga, Powell (is will see), and Mihm is done. I would even say Fesenko who is in Utah’s IA is better than Mbenga, Mihm, or Powell who is in Lakers rotation. Hell even Chuck Seimb could do what Mbenga and Mihm do and he is in Detroit’s IA.
Um MC Zach Randolph is better than Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol alone.

Zach Randolph w/o Curry…
.467 (FG%), .819 (FT%), 23.6 (PPG), 10.1 (RPG), 2.2 (APG), .292 (3pt%)

Pau Gasol w/o Kobe 07-08…
.501 (FG%), .819 (FT%), 18.9 (PPG), 8.8 (RPG), 3 (APG), .267 (3pt%)

Andrew Bynum last year
.636 (FG%) *Hardly shoots, .695 (FT%), 13.1 (PPG), 10.2 (RPG) *This year Zach averaged 10.3 (RPG), 1.7 (APG), .0 (3pt%)

Zach Randolph statistically speaking has better #’s than both of the best PF’s in the game in Duncan and Garnett. Amongst the others in Boozer, Pau, etc. In fact the only PF w/ superior stats is Amare Stoudamire. If Zach only had the will power and desire to win that the other players have he would be unstoppable.

Guide to Gourmet Coffee Maker

baskets brew
Masni Rizal Mansor asked:

If you are a coffee connoisseur, you have probably invested some time and thought into the type of coffee you prefer (light, medium body, heavy), and you are probably familiar with all the different types of coffee makers available to you. But what exactly distinguishes gourmet coffee makers from the rest of the pack? And more importantly, do you need to invest in one to enjoy a truly good cup of coffee at home?

Types Of Coffee Makers

There are just as many ways to make coffee as there are flavors/types of coffee. The most standard home brewing method is with a traditional drip coffee maker, which consists of a basket for you to place a filter and grounds, and a reservoir for you to add water. The water is heated and filters over the grounds into your pot.

While coffee brewed in a traditional drip coffee maker is very popular, coffee aficionados would argue that filtered coffee loses a lot of flavor. If you are looking to experiment with less traditional, more gourmet, coffee makers you have a few options. The least expensive option is a French Press. These are typically smaller, only brewing a few cups of coffee, but the finished product is unfiltered coffee. If you like dark, rich coffee, this is your best bet. To use a French Press you simply pour your coffee grounds directly into the bottom of the press, and then pour hot water directly over the grounds. After a few minutes you gently press down a strainer to push the grounds to the bottom of the press, and you’re ready to enjoy an incredible cup of coffee.

More expensive gourmet coffee makers include vacuum coffee pots, which infuse the coffee and hot water through a vacuum process, like the name suggests. Some people prefer this over a French Press because there is no sediment found in the finished coffee, but like a French Press the coffee is also unfiltered. The highest end gourmet coffee makers are espresso machines, like the ones you see in cafes. The actual process of brewing the coffee is similar to a drip maker, except that you are tamping the grounds into a basket for the water to flow through, and no filter is involved. You can control the pressure of the water that flows over the grounds, which produces different tastes.

Whether or not you need a gourmet coffee maker to make a truly good cup of coffee depends on your taste. Ultimately the quality of the coffee depends on the beans themselves, but different coffee makers will produce different tastes even using the same beans. Experiment with gourmet coffee makers and see which one fits your taste the best.

10 Common Mistakes Made In A Coffee House

baskets brew
Gabriel Adams asked:

The barista gives you the wrong drink.

This happens more than most people know especially during peak times. Imagine getting in your car after picking up a delicious mocha and heading in to work on your normal commute. Then feeling a bit tired and a little bored; you reach for that steaming hot cup of joe. You expect to be treated by a warm chocolate goodness but instead it takes like pumpkin. Even worse you do not like pumpkin. What a let down! If you turn around and go back and face that long line again you will be late for work. So you decide you will just try to drink as much of the drink as you can. Baristas often get in a hurry and give you the wrong drink or does not properly hear what beverage to make. This made one person in Georgia so upset; that in a few months he opened his own shop with a commitment to ensure that you always get what you order.

I ordered decaf why do I have the jitters?

This is one of the most widespread mistakes that baristas will admit they may have made on numerous occasions. If caffeine bothers your systems or affects you adverse be sure you watch the barista make your beverage. It is okay to ask when they hand you the drink this is decaf right?

I am a diabetic but I ordered sugar free right?

This mistake is not made a lot. But places where you can watch your hot and tasty beverage being made it is a good idea to keep an eye on the barista making your coffee.

Most all baristas surveyed said they may have made that mistake before but on rare occasions.

Your hot beverage is handed to you cold!

This may seem funny to you but almost all barista’s surveyed said they have done this at least once. So when you are expecting a hot beverage to be hot and it’s cold it is a different kind of wake up call.

My drink taste sweet but where the espresso?

For whatever reason most all baristas admit that on several occasions that they forgot to put the espresso in your beverage. Sure you still may have what is commonly called a steamer (steamed milk and syrup) but it is not the same. The espresso especially the caffeinated version is what many of us need to get to a great start to our day.

OOPS, the lid popped off and my white shirt is ruined!

Most all baristas insist they always put the lid on correctly. However I have been in many coffee shops where the lid pops off and coffee splashes all over a white dress or white shirt. This has all the makings of a very bad day.

My drink does not taste right.

Many baristas even at the same store makes drinks differently. This occurs even if there are strict guidelines at the store for consistency. A little less white chocolate in a 16oz drink has a totally different taste then a drink with the normal amount.

Too Strong!

Some barista put so much espresso in a drink it’s like drinking out of a burnt tar pit. This is also caused by cheap, spoiled or over-roasted espresso. Make sure if you do not like how the drink taste to tell the barista.

Wrong Milk

The barista know I always order a vanilla soy latte. However today I take a sip and its half and half. This drink is known as a breve latte. It’s almost a complete 180 from soy. This also can really set a bad tone for your day.

What’s that in my coffee?

To me there nothing worse than ordering a brewed coffee to find out that it is full of grinds. This is usually caused when pressure and steamed has caused the filter in the brew basket to flip during the brewing process. Most good barista always check this. However almost all barista’s surveyed said this has happened to them.

Homemade Gift Baskets for Teachers

Janet Vogel asked:

Creating a gift basket for your child’s teacher is a great way to show your gratitude for the attention and assistance paid to your children. The time you dedicate to putting together an assortment of gift and food items, chosen just for the teacher, is your way of personalizing your gift as a gesture of your appreciation.

If the teacher drinks coffee, make this your theme. A natural colored wicker basket is the ideal container. Place straw, crumpled brown paper, or shredded newspaper in the basket before placing the gifts. Add a decorative coffee mug, gourmet coffee, envelopes of flavored coffee, and small packages of cookies or chocolate candy. You can wrap the finished gift in cello paper or a cello bag tied at the top with raffia or curly ribbon. Place the gift card in the basket with the gifts so it doesn’t get lost.

It’s not necessary to spend a great deal of money on these gift baskets. Visit your local dollar type store for baskets, organizers, or large coffee mugs to use as containers. They usually carry an assortment of colorful shred to use as filler, ribbons, bows, gift tags, and lots of small gift items that are nice when making gift baskets.

Movies, music, and sports are other themes that should be appropriate for many teachers. Simply choose a container, filler materials to help hold your gift items in place, and well wrapped food and gift items. Gift cards are always great gifts when you are unsure of the preferences of the teachers.

An assortment of bath products and aromatherapy items is a nice idea for a female teacher. Fill in empty spaces with rolled washcloths, bars of soap, votive candles, a loofah, net sponges, etc. If you include food gifts make sure they are well wrapped as the scents from the bath products may seep in.

Your gift basket can be as simple as a wicker basket lined with a colorful cloth napkin or tea towel. Place a loaf of freshly baked bread (or several muffins) wrapped in see through bags or wrap and tied with raffia in the same color as the napkin or tea towel. Add several tea bags and a couple of small jars of preserves or jelly.

Guide to Built in Coffee Maker

Masni Rizal Mansor asked:

Many homeowners do not appreciate losing counter space for an appliance and are increasingly turning to a built in coffee maker. These appliances can still be available for use at all times while keeping the surface of the counter free of clutter.

The prices of a built in coffee maker can run several thousands of dollars, but offer the convenience of not having to add water each time, as they are plumbed directly into the house. Adding water is as simple as determining how much coffee you are going to make and pushing the right button.

Adding grounds is accomplished by pulling out the basket, adding the filter and the grounds and some of the more expensive built in coffee makers are equipped with a coffee grinder as well, so your coffee is brewed using fresh ground beans, which also can be stored in the unit.

Some Less Expensive Models Not Plumbed

For those who cannot afford, or who don’t wish to spend thousands of dollars on a coffee maker, there are less expensive models that fit into the wall or attach to the underside of a kitchen cabinet. Although Brew Express does offer a built in coffee maker which is plumbed into the wall and hard wired which costs about $450.00

A couple of units are simply a box cut into the wall into which a coffee maker placed. Its wire comes out the front to be plugged in and the entire unit is removed to add water and grounds. It is then placed back into the wall for brewing. Still, other built in coffee makers are designed to be hung from a bracket attached to the top of a conventional coffee maker to keep it raised above the surface.

There are a few advantages to the more expensive models of a built in coffee maker as they usually are self-filling, adding just the right amount of water after each brewing. All the user need do is add fresh grounds and turn it on. It not only frees an outlet in your kitchen, since it is wired directly into the house, many models also have plugs built into them, giving you more outlets than were originally available.

By visiting www.bizrate.com you will be able to see the vast array of built in coffee makers available, the price range of the numerous varieties and choose the right one for your use.
